This series explores how each of us carries within our body the same elemental structures that form the universe around us. The work addresses how intimately connected we are not only to each other, but also to the earth, sky and waters around us.
At first I am taken within, to the rhythms of breath, the branching structures of our lungs. The flow of air and feel of water carry me on to see aerial views of dark coastal landforms, rock and ice formations. Some pieces resemble the fluid-filled interstitial space between cells of the body, while at the same time containing echoes of the star-filled depths of outer space. I am reminded of the vastness of sky and earth, and our smallness in the face of it all. Rhythms of air, land and water binding internal and external worlds.
Large Grid Paintings
Each 22"x30" sheet of paper holds a world of ninety-six miniature watercolour paintings
12" x 12" Acrylic
Building on the watercolour studies, the change in medium to acrylic has allowed me to continue to explore the similarities between organic structures within our bodies and the natural world around us
"Each of us carries in our veins a salty stream in which the elements sodium, potassium and calcium are combined in almost the same proportions as in sea water. ...And as life itself began in the sea, so each of us begins our individual life in a miniature ocean within our mother's womb."
